  • Chester’s Abbey Square was transformed into Victorian London for a Sherlock Holmes adaptation complete with obligatory fog.Netflix is back filming The Irregulars about a group of street urchins who solve crimes while the famous private detective takes all the credit.

This was a return visit for programme makers who used Abbey Square for a shoot last September. The cast wore formal hats and coats from the period sometimes crossing paths with locals passing through or taking a peek at the action dressed in modern attire including high vis.

The Georgian buildings and cobble stones created the olde worlde backdrop, especially when a horse-drawn cart rode across the square as the unmistakable sound of hooves echoed all around.Turning back the clock also involved a few tricks such as covering up modern features like CCTV cameras and installing fake gas lanterns. Instant fog was courtesy of a smoke machine. And the Abbey Square street sign was replaced with one for ‘Archibold Grove’.

There were TV trucks galore packed with audio visual equipment plus hydraulic lifts and booms carrying lights, cameras and microphones.Filming began late afternoon on Thursday and carried on into the evening.Actors taking part in filming for Netflix’s The Irregulars in Chester’s Abbey Square.bbey Square has an association with Sherlock Holmes that goes back to about 1990 when Granada TV filmed the Conan Doyle story Thor Bridge as part of the classic series starring Jeremy Brett.

Brett and co-star Edward Hardwicke, who played Dr Watson, spent an entire day in and around Abbey Square and were also filmed coming down the Chester Town Hall steps for an episode that was first broadcast in January 1991.

And in 2015 actor Stephen Mangan was spotted filming in nearby Abbey Green when he played Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle for the ITV period drama Houdini & Doyle, which aired the following year.
