  • A vision for the future of Chester’s Dee House will be presented to residents at public drop-in sessions next month. The Dee House and Amphitheatre Working Group was formed after the council failed to deliver on 2016 plans to convert the crumbling Georgian property into a hotel, restaurant and visitor centre in partnership with Daniel Thwaites plc.

Members representing a wide range of views were tasked with coming up with a way forward after gathering facts about the grade II-listed landmark building from a number of experts.

Now the public are invited to comment on its final recommendations at the events on Thursday, February 6, 6-8pm, in Chester’s Storyhouse and on Wednesday, February 12, 1-5pm, at the Palatine Room in Chester Town Hall .A decision over what to do with Dee House will have to be taken soon before it falls down.Andy Foster, chair of the group, said: “After carefully considering all the facts from a series of experts on archaeology and historic building conservation, the group has concluded our discussions with a series of recommendations.

“We would like to share our recommendations with the wider community at these events in order to gain their feedback. Our final report to the council will include our recommendations and the feedback from the wider community.”

Mr Foster has previously argued demolition is ‘technically impossible’ due to strict listed building ‘hurdles’ so it seems likely the recommendations will include at least partial retention of Dee House. There have been calls for it to be redeveloped as a visitor centre or museum.

Funding the expensive works could still prove an obstacle to any plans becoming a reality.A decision over what to do with Dee House will have to be taken soon before it falls down.

Members of the working group will be present at the drop-in events to explain their findings and answer questions from the public.

The session on February 6 will include a short presentation by Andy Foster. Book online at Eventbrite if you wish to attend that presentation. There is no need for a ticket should anyone wish to attend the rest of the event. The recommendations will be available online after February 6 for anyone unable to attend either of these meetings.
